株式会社MGNET(Make Good Networksの略)は、新潟県燕三条地域を拠点とするソーシャルデザイン企業です。 MGNET Inc. (short for Make Good Networks) is a social design company based in the Tsubame-Sanjo region of Niigata Prefecture. Born out of a family business that operated a mold-making factory, our mission is to create a virtuous cycle across three areas: products, experiences, and communities. Our activities include planning, manufacturing, and selling our own brand, “FOR”; operating the curated retail shop “FACTORY FRONT”; managing community development hubs; and participating in the “Tsubame-Sanjo Factory Festival,” one of Japan’s largest open-factory events. What drives us is our commitment to continuously reinterpret and share the craftsmanship, technology, and culture of Tsubame-Sanjo—home to more than 3,000 small factories—with the next generation in mind.

Taiwan × Tsubame-Sanjo: A Regenerative Project Born from Manufacturing Culture

【Challenge Overview】

Tsubame-Sanjo is one of Japan’s leading manufacturing regions, home to more than 3,000 small factories, many of which specialize in metalworking. Its long-standing craftsmanship culture—centered on repairing things and using them for a long time—has embodied sustainable values for generations. Taiwan is also home to major clusters of precision manufacturing and OEM industries, while interest in environmentally conscious consumption and tourism has grown rapidly in recent years.

Building on these shared characteristics, propose, from the perspective of Taiwanese students, a business and/or experience model that communicates Tsubame-Sanjo’s “manufacturing culture” to Taiwan through the new lens of regeneration (see Note 1), which goes one step beyond sustainability, and that creates a circular connection between the industries, tourism, and people of the two regions. (See Note 2)

① Communicate Tsubame-Sanjo’s manufacturing culture, particularly its metalworking heritage, to Taiwan from the new perspective of regeneration.

② Based on this communication, develop a concrete business or experience model that connects Taiwan and Tsubame-Sanjo.

Note 1: “Regenerative,” as defined by Regenerative Community Tokyo, of which MGNET is a member, refers to going one step beyond the concept of “sustainability,” which focuses on reducing negative environmental impacts. It means continuously regenerating the environment, economy, and society into better states.

If sustainability is understood as reducing negative impacts on the environment and society while maintaining or improving current conditions, regeneration aims to go further: actively restoring and revitalizing the environment while also creating new value for the economy, society, culture, and people’s well-being. (Reference: https://regenerative-city.jp/about/)

At first glance, manufacturing and regeneration may appear to be contradictory concepts. For this challenge, however, we encourage you to deliberately explore the relationship between the two and develop a fresh perspective.

Note 2: Your proposal does not need to address all three areas—industry, tourism, and people circulation. You may focus strongly on just one of them.

【Points to Consider】

① Identify and redefine the value of products currently lying unused or dormant in factories in Tsubame-Sanjo, and explore ways to sell them in Taiwan through storytelling, branding, and marketing.

② Develop ideas for products, experiences, or services for the Taiwanese market by leveraging Tsubame-Sanjo’s artisan network, including MGNET’s own brand, “FOR.”

③ Explore technical exchange and collaborative manufacturing (co-creation) with Taiwanese factories and creators, as well as community-building approaches that use social media and digital platforms to connect young people in Taiwan with craftspeople in Tsubame-Sanjo.

④ In addition to realistic and feasible ideas, bold and original ideas that reflect a student perspective are also welcome.

【Expected Deliverables】

① Idea overview, including a concept title/name

② A strategy for communicating Tsubame-Sanjo’s manufacturing culture to the Taiwanese market

③ Concrete proposals for products, experiences, or services involving MGNET and companies in Tsubame-Sanjo, including specific approaches to collaboration ④ Business sustainability and scalability, including the design of a regenerative cycle
