Yuchi Township is located in the central part of Nantou County, Taiwan. Renowned for its mild climate and picturesque, breathtaking landscapes, the township is rich in tourism resources. It boasts two major world-class attractions: Sun Moon Lake, the largest freshwater lake on the western coast of the Pacific, and the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village. Additionally, the Daguan, Minghu, and Mingtan hydroelectric power plants all rely on the water resources of Sun Moon Lake for power generation, making the township one of the most critical tourism hubs in Nantou County.Yuchi is a quintessential agricultural township, with altitudes ranging from 500 to 2,200 meters above sea level and an average annual temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, providing cool and pleasant summers. The Yuchi Township Farmers’ Association has been established since 1915, serving the local community for over a century. The roots of the black tea industry date back to the 1930s, when early settlers began cultivating large-leaf tea trees. During this era, Yuchi’s black tea traveled across oceans and achieved international acclaim. Following World War II, between the 1960s and 1970s, black tea became a major pillar of Taiwan’s agricultural exports. At its peak, the Yuchi tea region accounted for over 1,700 hectares of Taiwan’s total 1,800-plus hectares of black tea plantations, highlighting the extraordinary prosperity of the local tea industry at the time. Entering the 21st century, through the collaborative efforts of various sectors in Yuchi Township, the black tea industry underwent a successful upgrade and transformation. This revitalization has once again won “Sun Moon Lake Black Tea" widespread recognition and favor among both domestic and international consumers. By the end of 2017, the recultivated and newly planted area of black tea reached over 600 hectares, solidifying the black tea industry as the most vital economic driver for Yuchi Township’s present and future.

Sustainable Transformation of a Century-Old Bond: Designing a Cross-Border Cultural, Tourism, and Smart Industry Innovation Exchange Plan Centered on “Arai Kokichi and the Story of Black Tea."
Yuchi Township in Nantou County, Taiwan, and Numata City in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, share a profound connection that spans over a century. This deep bond was forged by Mr. Arai Kokichi, a native of Numata City who dedicated his life to Taiwan’s black tea industry during the Japanese colonial period and is reverently known as the “Father of Taiwan Black Tea." In 2025, the two regions officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for exchange and cooperation. Yuchi Township is world-renowned for its premium Sun Moon Lake Assam black tea and possesses a rich tea culture heritage. Meanwhile, Numata City in Gunma Prefecture boasts abundant resources in smart agriculture, hot springs, breathtaking alpine scenery, and year-round seasonal fruit-picking tourism. The 2026 Sustainability Innovation Hackathon calls upon the youth from both regions to join forces. We look forward to the innovative thinking of Taiwanese and Japanese students to transform the historic sentiment of “A Cup of Tea, A Lifetime of Friendship" into concrete action plans. These initiatives aim to promote sustainable tourism, academic research, green production, and cultural integration between both sides, while collectively advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Challenge Description / Details
